Still Time To Pass Pro-Life Bill In House Chamber; Ask House Leaders to Honor Their Word05 Apr

The law is not the only means of protecting life, but it plays a key and often decisive role in affecting both human behavior and thinking. Those called to civil leadership, as Pope John Paul II reminds us, “have a duty to make courageous choices in support of life, especially through legislative measures.” -Gospel of Life, No.90

Please join Archbishop Joseph Kurtz at the State Capitol in Frankfort on April 12 to make a final push to pass a bill that respects a woman’s right to complete information about abortion before she consents to allow the surgery.

Advocates supporting a woman’s right to know are gathering from all across the Commonwealth at 9:30 am to visit with their legislators and to ask House leaders to bring HB 274 out of the Rules Committee and to the House floor for a vote by the membership.

BACKGROUND

Call 1 800 372 7181 and leave message for Democratic House leaders

Kentucky House leaders told our bishops that they would bring a bill regarding informed consent to the House floor for a vote of the body during this session. The bill is needed to make it clear that the informed consent law requires a face-to-face conversation with the patient in the same room, and not merely telling a patient to listen to a pre-recorded telephone message.

The current practice is disrespectful of the woman as a person. It treats her as an object, a mere recipient of information. It does not allow her to ask questions, get additional information, or explain her own health history.

In relying on a recorded message, Kentucky abortion practitioners deny their patients the information they need to make an informed consent about whether or not to proceed with an abortion. As former U. S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart wrote, “Abortion is inherently different from other medical procedures because no other procedure involves the purposeful termination of a potential life.”

TAKE ACTION

Please join us in Frankfort at the State Capitol at 9:30 am on Thursday, April 12.

And please call 1 800 372-7181 before April 12 and leave this message with the receptionist for Speaker Stumbo, and Representatives Larry Clark, Rocky Adkins, Bob Damron, and Tommy Thompson: Please honor your word to our bishops and bring HB 274 to the House floor for a vote by the body on April 12. Thank you.

School Choice in Kentucky: Location, Location, Location
A recent survey by the Lexington-Bluegrass Association of Realtors found that an overwhelming majority of Fayette County registered voters say that the quality of local schools is an important factor when choosing a home.  This is not surprising and the results would likely be the same throughout the Commonwealth.  Yet, one must wonder if this […]
