Bishops Urge Congress to Fulfill Role of Government09 Oct

On September 30, Archbishop Gomez and Bishops Pates and Blaire, who chair three committees at the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops have written both chambers of Congress urging members to honor their obligations to the people of the United States and do their job. They wrote:

The Catholic bishops of the United States stand ready to work with leaders of both parties for a budget that reduces future unsustainable deficits, protects poor and vulnerable people, advances the common good, and promotes human life and dignity.

Logo CircleWith the country reeling from the shutdown of government, USCCB is encouraging Catholics to join with the bishops in calling upon Congress to put a “Circle of Protection” around poor and vulnerable people at home and abroad. CCK also asks that you ask Kentucky’s two senators and 6 House members to heed the following principles in making their decisions:

  • Adequately fund programs that address hunger and joblessness, and help people rise above poverty in the United States and around the world;
  • Replace sequestration with a balanced plan that includes revenues as well as responsible spending cuts;
  • Raise the debt ceiling in a responsible manner so as not to harm struggling families and poor and vulnerable people in our country and around the world; and
  • Work for inclusion of the Health Care Conscience Rights Act (H.R. 940, S. 1204). Government must not force Americans to violate their religious and moral beliefs on respect for life when they provide health care or purchase health coverage.
