CCK Opposes SB 299

SB 299 will eliminate the Department of Charitable Gaming and place the regulation of charitable gaming under a new Horse Racing and Gaming Corporation. The new Corporation's board will be dominated by members representing the horse racing industry. The charitable gaming office within this new Corporation will have no authority except what is granted to it by the board. 

Charitable gaming has always been regulated by its own agency, empowered to oversee charitable gaming and nothing else. To put charitable gaming under the authority of for-profit gambling interests, who often see charitable gaming as competition, could have devastating effects on charitable gaming over the long term.

The text of this bill was introduced on Tuesday morning as an amendment to another bill that had already received readings. That same day, it received a committee hearing and Senate floor vote. It could be voted on by the House as early as Thursday. This process is often used to move things quickly before objections can be raised. It is imperative that we contact members of the House NOW and urge them to slow down and not rush this through.
